As coal is a highly pollutive source of energy, China needs to look to other sources of energy to provide for its ever growing demand while protecting its environment. Hence, through the 12th FYP the Chinese government set the target proportion of non-fossil fuels in China's primary energy consumption to reach 11.4 percent by 2015, from 8.3 percent in 2010.
